Notes

1. In 2013, Francis unveiled another encyclical letter, Lumen Fidei, or “The Light of Faith.” As Francis noted at the time, that encyclical was “the work of four hands,” two of which belonged to Pope Benedict XVI. Textual analysis reveals that the vast majority of this text was indeed produced by Benedict, who did not have time to complete the work before his resignation went into effect in February 2013. Further, it is clear that “The Light of Faith” is the third in a trilogy of encyclicals planned early in the pontificate of Benedict, one on each of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. See his 2005 encyclical Deus Caritas Est (“God Is Love”) and his 2007 encyclical Spe Salvi (“Saved in Hope”) for comparison. An encyclical is a teaching letter written by a pope (generally with assistance) and intended to be circulated among bishops and eventually all the faithful. It invokes the highest level of teaching authority belonging to a pope (as opposed to the even higher authority of documents of an ecumenical church council). The phrase “social encyclicals” describes the fraction of these writings that deal primarily with social relations, including political, economic, and cultural matters. Apostolic exhortations are papal documents similar in form to encyclicals but are proposed with a somewhat lower level of doctrinal authority.
